Shayna Raphael

I am a graduate from the University of Washington with a BS in Speech and Hearing Sciences; I also have earned an MA in Education from Pacific Lutheran University with a heavy focus in special education and a graduate certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis from Arizona State University. I currently reside in Tacoma, WA with my husband and two daughters.

Upon graduation from the UW in Speech and Hearing Sciences, I served a large, local school district as a Speech Language Pathologist for two years.  Wanting to experience the private sector, I managed a private pediatric speech clinic for nearly four years, and I dedicated myself to the speech and language field.  For six years, I spent time in schools and the private sector working with a wide range of needs and diagnoses, to include articulation and pragmatic delays, receptive and expressive deficits, as well as sensory and feeding needs.  As part of my work, I served children needing support programming and implementing AAC devices.  My work in private clinics helped me learn the business side of speech sciences while delivering services and working with parents, kids, and agencies dedicated to making children’s lives better.

I returned to public schools, and after teaching in self-contained classrooms for elementary age students identified as having emotional and behavioral disorders, I moved into the role of Behavior Intervention Specialist. In this position, I would work directly with students as I coach teachers and administrators on identifying strategies and interventions to support students’ success in the classroom and on the playground.  I collaborated with families, school personnel, and community members to determine placement, approaches, and best fit for students who struggle to self-manage and regulate behaviors in order for them to access school with their general education peers and feel successful.

My professional goals include creating and implementing meaningful structures in services, in collaboration with families and schools, which are applicable to immediate, real-world situations.  My goals include development of equitable practices and sustainable constructs that give opportunities to all students.  I am grateful to continue my role as a supportive coach, expert, and collaborative practitioner through my work as a private educational consultant.

As an educator, it is my responsibility to ensure that students of all ability levels are receiving an excellent education and have access to general education opportunities; further, it is my goal to support efforts that allow for students’ behavioral needs to be met in the best and most effective way possible.  And lastly, along with increasing my skills and knowledge, it’s my intent to always maintain my compassion, dedication, humor, empathy, kindness, and hope.
